Using paratransit when you visit another city
If you are ADA paratransit eligible at home, you do not need to reapply for a short visit.
The rule (49 CFR 37.127)
- Agencies must serve visitors who present documentation of ADA eligibility from their home jurisdiction.
- Service is required for any combination of 21 days during any 365-day period, beginning with your first use.
- If your home area has no paratransit, the agency may ask for proof of residence and, if your disability is not apparent, proof of disability. It must then treat you as eligible for visitor service.
- After 21 days of use, the agency may require you to apply for its own eligibility.
Practical steps
- Find the provider for the city you will visit (browse by state).
- Call or write a week or more ahead; many agencies ask visitors to register before the first trip.
- Have your home agency ID or eligibility letter ready.
- Book your first trip the day before, as residents do.
